These pictures of Mahakumbh have been captured by Astronaut Don Pettit from the International Space Station (ISS). These pictures have been shared on social media platform X. In these, a large queue of devotees is seen standing on the banks of the Ganges shining with lights. This indicates a very large scale of this religious event. There is curiosity about Mahakumbh all over the world. A large number of devotees from abroad are also participating in it.
American astronaut and chemical engineer, Pettit is known for his contributions to astrophotography and space exploration. He also invented the first patented object in space, ‘Zero-G Cup’. Pettit (69) is considered to be NASA’s oldest active astronaut. He has spent about one and a half years on the ISS. The return to Earth of NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Barry Wilmore stranded on the ISS has been postponed till March. In June last year, both these astronauts reached ISS via Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft.
Recently NASA had said that their return has been postponed due to the delay in SpaceX’s Crew-10 mission. The reason for this delay is the ongoing work on the new Crew Dragon spacecraft. The Crew-10 mission will be accompanied by NASA astronauts Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers, JAXA’s Takuya Onishi and Roscosmos cosmonaut Kirill Peskov. This mission will be launched at the end of March through SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket. SpaceX is owned by billionaire Elon Musk. The mission duration of Indian-origin Sunita Williams and Barry Wilmore was for 10 days but due to technical problems in the Starliner spacecraft, they have been stuck on the ISS for almost 11 months. A few months ago, the command of ISS was handed over to Williams by Russian astronaut Oleg Kononenko. As commander of the ISS, Williams is overseeing various operations and research.
